about

Columbus, Ohio indie pop band, The Last Hotel, started in 1997 and continued under various line-ups until 2005.

Primarily an outlet for singer-songwriter and journalist Ryan Horns, members Keith Jenkins (lead guitar); Adam Dowell (bass); Jess Faller (keys); Dan Bell (drums) and Bill Learned (guitar), would go on to become the group's main recording and touring line up.

The Last Hotel released its self-titled EP in 2003. The music was critically well received and the single, "I'll Never Mind," enjoyed regular rotation on the newly-created XM satellite radio; gaining attention from iconic producer Rick Rubin.

In 2005, the band went into Workbook Studio with engineer Jon Chinn to record its first full-length album, "Little Engines." The album represented Horns' newfound fascination with documenting his journalistic crime coverage. Recording on the album was completed later that year. Soon after, the band called it quits.

Members of The Last Hotel went on to create music in other great Ohio groups such as Paper Airplane, The Moving Parts, Tiara, Bicentennial Bear, Celebrity Pilots and Miranda Sound.

Unfortunately, most of the"Little Engine" recordings were lost when the studio subsequently moved locations. The album remained lost for the next five years, until the files were finally recovered in 2011.

The past year was spent getting these songs together for people to finally enjoy. Many of the tracks remain in their rough mix form.

The music of The Last Hotel captures a time when the Columbus music scene was still between its Midwestern punk past and its eclectic folk future. The band never quite fit into either category, but its efforts were often compared favorably to the music of John Lennon, Jeff Buckley, T Rex or ELO.

Despite being lost for so many years, the music of "Little Engines" still feels relevant today.
